Know the differences between the open and enclosed carriers. Learn which option best suits your vehicle's transport needs.
OPEN VS ENCLOSED CARRIERS
If this is your first time transporting a vehicle you should know that there a two types of carriers for transport, open and enclosed. Understanding the differences between both types of carriers will give you better idea of which option best suits you and your vehicle's transport needs. And although each service has its benefits the following explains what sets the enclosed auto transport service apart.
FULL VEHICLE PROTECTION DURING TRANSPORT
The number one reason why clients opt to go with the enclosed carriers is for the vehicle protection. Since the auto carriers are covered, the risk of damage to vehicles is practically eliminated. Vehicles are not exposed to any elements of the weather and the road such as rain, dust, hail, road debris, sun etc. You can transport any luxury or exotic car across the U.S. and maintain its showroom condition. In addition, enclosed car carriers carry a minimum of $250,000 and up to $1,000,000 of coverage insurance on every vehicle they transport.
COST DIFFERENCE OF OPEN AND ENCLOSED CARRIERS
Due to the limited amount of carriers offering enclosed auto transport service and the demand for the service, transporting vehicles enclosed is a bit more costly. On average, enclosed car carriers cost $300-$1,000 more than the open car carriers. The extra cost is also attributed to the operating of the carriers. Since the enclosed auto carriers are the best available in the industry they are also more expensive to operate, service and maintain.
TOP OF THE LINE ENCLOSED CAR CARRIERS
When vehicles are transported enclosed, carriers will be either soft-sided or hard-sided. Because enclosed car carriers are smaller and limited in space, normally it is only able to accommodate 2-7 vehicles. This means that there will be less vehicles to pickup, less vehicles to deliver which may mean faster transit times. The use of lift gates instead of loading ramps allows the enclosed carrier to handle any low clearance vehicle without damaging the bottom. It is designed to fasten vehicles with the use of “soft-tie” straps instead of chains. These "soft-tie" straps are placed over the tire to gently secure your vehicle to the trailer without scratching and damaging the wheels or chassis paint.
