Factors that affect car shipping cost

Distance
The distance of the shipment is one of the most significant factors that will determine the cost of car shipping. Longer distances will typically cost more than shorter ones. The farther the distance, the more fuel and labor will be required, and the higher the cost will be.

Type of Vehicle
The type of vehicle you’re shipping will also affect the cost. Larger vehicles, such as SUVs and trucks, will cost more to ship than smaller cars. This is because they take up more space on a transport truck, and require more fuel and labor to move.

Vehicle Condition
Does your car run and drive? Will it be able to get on and off our carrier on its own power? If not, we will require extra equipment and labor to safely transport your inoperable car. We’ll assign a truck equipped with a winch to load and unload your vehicle. Please keep in mind, vehicles must be able to steer and roll.

Type of Transport
The type of transport you choose will also affect the cost of car shipping. Two methods for shipping a car are open transport and enclosed car shipping. Open transport, where the vehicle is shipped on an open trailer with other vehicles, is the most affordable option. Enclosed transport, where the vehicle is shipped in a closed container, is more expensive but offers greater protection for the vehicle.

Time of Year
The season of the year can also affect the cost of car shipping. During the peak summer months, demand for car shipping is typically higher which can drive up prices. On the other hand, during the off-season, there may be less demand and therefore lower prices. Additionally, inclement weather during certain seasons, such as heavy snow during winter, can cause delays and increase costs.

What is the cheapest way to ship a car?

Choose open transport: This is the industry’s standard method of shipping cars—and the most economic way.
Ship an operable car: Make sure your vehicle runs and drives. Carriers will add to the total costs if they’re handling inoperable cars.
Book in advance: Booking and reserving ahead of time will help you save the costs of expedite or last minute requests.
Be flexible with schedule: Having an open schedule will almost surely get you an affordable quote.
Transport during low-season: Shipping a car is typically cheaper in winter than in summer.
Ship to and from major cities: If you live in a rural area, arrange for your car pickup and delivery near a major city.
Transport multiple cars: Shipping more than (1) vehicle on the same truck will save you money.
Ask for discount: Are you an active military member, seasonal traveler, or repeat client? Ask for a discount.

Don't be fooled by online calculators

Shipping cost will vary from company to company. Keep in mind that online calculators and marketing companies (3rd parties) advertising for carriers are not interested in asking detailed- logistical questions involving your vehicle’s move. They are motivated by selling you the cheapest rates so you can buy low and at times inflate your quote upon delivery. That is the main reason why companies fail and have such poor reputations. You should be prepared with details regarding your vehicle and other factors prior to obtaining quotes and making a final decision.
